Noelani grew up in a family with an impossible secret. Her parents and siblings can step through mysterious “Holes” and vanish across the world, but Noelani and her blue-eyed baby brother, Boo, were born outside that gift. She has made her peace with being the grounded one—the older sister, the protector, the almost-second mother who stays behind while the rest of her family slips through hidden doorways to everywhere else.
Then Boo does the impossible.
At barely three and a half years old, Boo opens a new kind of Hole—one that Noelani can use, and one that doesn’t lead through space, but through time. For Noelani, the temptation is immediate and overwhelming. A year and a half earlier, she lost Jonathan, the boy she loved and the future she thought she would have. If Boo can open a path into the past, maybe she can change the one thing she has never been able to accept. Maybe she can save him.
Instead, her first desperate leap goes catastrophically wrong.
Noelani and Boo are thrown into a ravaged future America after the Flu-Measles, a world of empty towns, mass graves, starving survivors, and cannibal packs hunting the last scraps of human life. Trapped in the ruins of Minden, Louisiana, with dwindling supplies and no reliable way home, Noelani has only her training, her wits, her father’s 1911, and a child whose terrifying new ability obeys rules neither of them understands. Boo can open time Holes, but not on command, not safely, and never with the certainty Noelani needs. Every jump is a gamble. Every mistake can strand them in a worse year, a worse town, or a worse version of the world.
As they fight to survive, Noelani begins to discover that time travel is not a miracle but a maze—one filled with waypoints, hazards, crossroads that should not exist, and people who have learned to make a business of moving through broken timelines. Somewhere in that shifting maze may be a route back to Hawaii, back to 1984, and back to the one terrible day she is determined to rewrite. But the deeper Noelani pushes into the hidden logic of the Holes, the more she is forced to confront a brutal truth: changing the past may not erase pain. It may only create new lives, new losses, and new worlds that must bear the cost.
Wonderland is a time-travel survival novel, an apocalyptic adventure, and an emotional story of grief, courage, and responsibility. At its heart, it is about ferocious sisterly love: a young woman fighting to keep her brother alive, to find the road home, and to decide how much of reality she is willing to break for one more chance at the life she lost.
