Randall lives in a future that survived one catastrophe only to be trapped by another. After sterilizing plagues and population collapse reshaped the world, the rare young men and women still capable of having children became state-managed assets. Randall is one of them: a certified fertile Rosette, tracked, protected, and quietly funneled toward a life planned by other people. The system calls it duty. Randall knows it for what it is — a cage.
Patrice is trapped in the same cage. Brilliant, volatile, and far more dangerous than Randall first realizes, she wants out just as badly as he does. She also has something no one else seems to have: a map in her head of the mysterious Holes that puncture reality. When the two of them run from Camp Beauregard with Monitors closing in behind them, their escape becomes a desperate climb through a mothballed high-rise toward the first Hole Randall has ever seen — and the first real chance at freedom either of them has ever had.
But escape is only the beginning. The Holes do not simply jump across distance. They open into clusters, thresholds, and stranger realities with their own landscapes, dangers, and rules. One frantic transit becomes another, and then another, carrying Randall and Patrice through mountain paths, storm-dark mesas, impossible cities, and worlds where a single wrong choice can leave them stranded forever. The farther they go, the clearer it becomes that the Hole network is not just a path through space — it is a labyrinth that tunnels through time.
And Patrice has not come all this way just to disappear. Behind their flight lies a larger and more terrifying truth: the real enemy is the otherwordly Special Service. For the Special Service, other realities are not curiosities to be studied but targets to be reached, exploited, and, if necessary, emptied. Patrice believes the Doors between the three connected realities must be shut before the Special Service brings ruin everywhere they can reach.
Randall thought he was running away. Instead, he is being pulled toward a fight over the fate of entire worlds.
The Rabbit Hole is a dystopian science-fiction adventure of forced fertility, impossible portals, oppression, resistance, and escalating reality-crossing danger. It is the opening novel of the Holes Universe, where escape is never simple, freedom always has a cost, and stepping through the wrong door can change far more than one life.
